For nine years, Lupita Moreno has spent her own money and nearly all of her free time caring for the cats of Isla Mujeres. She’s a retired government worker who earns $80USD per week as a maid in a hotel. She spends upwards of $25USD per day feeding the cats.
After hearing that there was a woman feeding the island’s cat population, our chief animal rescue officer Natalie Garcia and two of our guests, Marta and Cecilia, found Lupita on our first Isla Mujeres visit (April 30-May 7, 2011). It took them the whole week to track her down. While they were only able to help her one night, she inspired us all to do more. It’s incredible what one person can accomplish. Lupita shows us all that you don’t need a lot to do a lot. All you need is the desire to make a difference.
Right now, Lupita is being evicted from her home because of the cats. While we plan to assist her both financially, medically and physically on our next visit to Isla Mujeres (September 24-October 1, 2011), she needs our help today. Sweet is collecting contributions for Lupita. We’ve found a way to put the money directly into her hands. Whether you can give $5 or $500, you’ll be making a huge difference in the life of this incredible woman and the lives of these cats. Write to Sweet at info [at] discoversweet.com, tell us how much you’d like to give and we’ll send you a link to our PayPal account where you can securely make your contribution.
Additionally, we’re talking to a few veterinarians about doing a huge cat spay and neuter clinic while we’re on the island this fall. If you know veterinarians who can help, please send them our way.
