The cat lady of Isla Mujeres

For nine years, Lupita Moreno has spent her own money and nearly all of her free time caring for the cats of Isla Mujeres. She’s a retired government worker who earns $80USD per week as a maid in a hotel. She spends upwards of $25USD per day feeding the cats.

After hearing that there was a woman feeding the island’s cat population, our chief animal rescue officer Natalie Garcia and two of our guests, Marta and Cecilia, found Lupita on our first Isla Mujeres visit (April 30-May 7, 2011). It took them the whole week to track her down. While they were only able to help her one night, she inspired us all to do more. It’s incredible what one person can accomplish. Lupita shows us all that you don’t need a lot to do a lot. All you need is the desire to make a difference.

Right now, Lupita is being evicted from her home because of the cats. While we plan to assist her both financially, medically and physically on our next visit to Isla Mujeres (September 24-October 1, 2011), she needs our help today. Sweet is collecting contributions for Lupita. We’ve found a way to put the money directly into her hands. Whether you can give $5 or $500, you’ll be making a huge difference in the life of this incredible woman and the lives of these cats. Write to Sweet at info [at], tell us how much you’d like to give and we’ll send you a link to our PayPal account where you can securely make your contribution.

Additionally, we’re talking to a few veterinarians about doing a huge cat spay and neuter clinic while we’re on the island this fall. If you know veterinarians who can help, please send them our way.

This was a sweet story and it doesnt take much to express love in the world, when little steps are big.

I’ve met Lupita several times and I also roam Isla Mujeres and feed cats when I’m there! I’ve been visiting the island for about 12 years now. Thank you for this blog to make people aware of Saint Lupita and the cat dilemma on the island.

Please email me with Paypal info.

This is incredible! We’ve known Lupita for about 6 years and she has always tirelessly made her rounds to feed the cats on Isla. We always make it a point to find her and help her when we’re there (we visit yearly). She has one of the brightest and most loving souls I’ve ever had the blessing to meet. Thanks for recognizing her and getting the word out to the world.

I work at an animal shelter and definitely understand how overwhelming caring for so many cats can be and this woman doing it on her own is simply amazing. Please email me with the paypal information. Thank you and I will be joining her in wrangling cats in Sept!

Please contact me if you have arranged a spay/neuter clinic this trip. I may be able to help.

Thanks, Leah Whitesell, CVT Practice manager

you may want to contact alison at she runs a dog rescue on the island and she coordinates spay/neuter clinics several times a year….perhaps she could help you coordinate this. she also has a wish list on her website of items that tourists can bring to help as well. good luck!

We have know Lupita for several years and she is usually one of the first people we seek out. She had a shop on Hildago for several years and that made it easy. But some how we are lucky to find her . She is an amazing Lady and we would love to help her out. We wont be returning till early next year so if you can get funds to her that would be great.
