On June 12, Sweet kicked off a three-concert series to benefit marriage equality on a perfect 75 degree day in California’s Wine Country.
Sweet co-founder Jen Rainin and her wife Franco Stevens hosted about 75 women (and a few adorable gay boys) at their beautiful outdoor amphitheater nestled in the northern Napa Valley vineyards for an afternoon with lesbian favorite Edie Carey. The concert was a benefit for NCLR (the National Center for Lesbian Rights).
Edie sparkled as she combined her stunning indie folk-pop style with the unique acoustics of the beautiful Napa Valley. Her warmth and vulnerability created such an atmosphere of compassion and generosity that three audience members were moved to offer incredible wine country weekend getaways to an impromptu auction, led by NCLR’s inimitable director Kate Kendell. NCLR is a national legal organization committed to advancing the civil and human rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people and their families through litigation, public policy advocacy, and public education. Sweet raised $6,350 to support NCLR’s marriage equality work.
Sweet’s Wine Country benefit concert series for marriage equality will continue with Mental 99 on July 23rd benefiting Equality California, and Blame Sally on August 13th benefiting Horizons Foundation.
