On July 17, 10 dedicated Sweeties joined Houston Mayor’s Sustainability Director Laura Spanjian, representatives from Houston’s Urban Harvest, GreenHoustonTX and the Buffalo Bayou Partnership in 95 degree heat to lend a hand at the Japhet Creek section of Buffalo Bayou.
We were treated to an educational tour of this beautiful area where we learned about the wildlife and native vegetation we would be working to preserve, then we all donned gloves, grabbed tools and went to work. We pulled masses of plastic trash that had been deposited during a recent storm out of the bayou as well as clearing a large overgrown section of the walking trail, making sure to remove the non-native invasive plants.
Afterward, we all met for lunch at Monica Pope’s Beavers Restaurant for a special menu created just for Sweet, complete with buttermilk pie and ancho chili ice cream to die for.
Thank you Houston for being warm and inviting in every way.
