Costa Maya, home of soft sandy beaches and majestic Mayan ruins, is located on the southeastern tip of Mexico between Cancun and Belize. The Costa Maya or the small region in the state of Quintana Roo is a great escape from the hustle and bustle of more developed Mexican cities.
With a full day at port you will be enticed by “ruin fever” to visit one of the many sites the Yucatan has to offer. Visit Chacchoben (Chak-cho-ben) Maya for “the place of red corn,” where structures were built around the year 300-360 AD. Chaccoben has a very special relaxing atmosphere, due to its lush environment. Spanish moss clings to the trees. A diverse variety of orchids bloom. Towering mahogany, cohune palms, strangler fig and hanging banyan trees sway in the gentle breeze.
Another must see, and one of my favorite sites, Kohunlich covers 21 acres surrounded by dense sub-tropical rainforest. Kohunlich was settled in 200 BC, but most of the structures were built in the early classic period from 250–600 AD. Here, you will hear the growls of howler monkeys as you view one of the most amazing pyramids, pyramid of the masks. The pyramid built in honor of the sun god boasts six fantastic stucco masks.
If ruins are not your thing, this sleepy village is the perfect place to sit under a grass thatched palapa, grab a cocktail and visit with friends. Or, if you are bursting with energy, 150 yards from shore a coral reef awaits. This reef offers much of what Belize’s more well-known reef has to offer, including sting rays, reef sharks, tropical fish, turtles and a huge variety of sea life.
Whatever you do, you’re sure to have a blast in sunny Costa Maya.
