RANFURLY HOMES FOR CHILDREN
Sunday, February 19, 2012, 10.30am – 2pm
Nassau, Bahamas
Meet at 10.30am at the end of the gangway pier
$65 per person (includes city tour, transportation, water and donation)

We’re visiting the Ranfurly Homes for Children, a safe haven for thousands of Bahamian children and teenagers since 1956. At present, they have 17 boys, ages range from 11 to 18, and 13 girls ages from 13 to 18. We plan to deliver wish-list supplies, interact with the teenagers, maybe play a bit of basketball.

We are combining this project with a two-and-a-half-hour private tour of the island. Ranfurly Home provides a safe, structured environment for kids who have been orphaned, abused, neglected or abandoned. Now, it has the capacity to accommodate more than 45 children who range in age from 5 to 20. It’s equipped with three dormitories, a study room, living room, a computer/library center and a kitchen and dining facility.

Participation is voluntary. If you would like to help, but not join us, please bring some wish-list items below. As the sizes of the children vary, the staff suggests we do not bring clothes. Start collecting supplies. No donation is too small.

WISH-LIST ITEMS
• Personal hygiene items for teen boys and girls, like gel, shampoo, conditioner, brushes, combs, bands, clips, hair dryers (same voltage as USA) and hand mirrors.

• Toothpaste, toothbrushes and floss (Ask your dentist to donate some toothbrushes, toothpaste and floss.)

• Nail polish and remover. Other manicure accessories.

• Totes and backpacks

• Educational games and books

• Sports gear and hats (Balls can be deflated for ease of transport. We’ll donate a pump to re-inflate them when we arrive.)

• DVDs and CDs (popular movies and music)

• Pens, pencils, markers, notebooks, paper and other school / art supplies.

Suzanne Westenhoefer, Portland

Sweet  Dec 16

suzanne westenhoefer 91 466x700 Suzanne Westenhoefer, Portland
What words best describe Comedian Suzanne Westenhoefer? How about bold, bawdy, and just plain hilarious? Not afraid to ask tough questions that uncover the laughs underneath, Suzanne’s made a career out of telling the truth. And the truth is, life is funny.

After entering the world of comedy on a dare, Suzanne has been delivering gay material in mainstream clubs to straight audiences and proudly performing within the LGBT community ever since. She became the first openly lesbian comic ever to appear on television in 1991 on an episode of Sally Jesse Raphael entitled “Breaking the Lesbian Stereotype…Lesbians Who Don’t Look Like Lesbians.” She went on to become the first openly gay comic to host her own HBO Comedy Special in 1994, which earned her a Cable Ace Award nomination. Other television appearances include The Late Show with David Letterman, GSN’s remake of the classic game show, “I’ve Got a Secret” as well as HBO, Bravo and LOGO TV specials.

Alcatraz Island restoration, San Francisco

Sweet  Nov 23

Can’t make the first Sweet garden restoration project in San Francisco? Here’s your second chance! We have a very limited number of spaces for the Alcatraz Gardens Restoration project, which comes with a free ferry ride to Alcatraz Island! Help re-establish the historic Alcatraz gardens by weeding, pruning and improving the compost area.

Through the project, volunteers will be introduced to the stories of the gardens and have the opportunity to visit some areas not accessible to the public.

The trade is a morning of your hard work on December 27, 2011, from 8:30am to noon. This project happens rain or shine. Please contact Darcie to signup. These spots will go quickly.

Meet at Pier 33 around 8:30am to take the ferry to Alcatraz Island where we’ll work until noon. Of course, they then ferry us back!

We’ll be getting waiver forms for volunteers to sign and bring with them on the day of the project.
